An Outline of the Course: History of lightning research.The physics of Lightining Phenomena. The electromagnetic field retarded potentials. Induced electric field strengths. Critical electric field strength values. Down-going leader and up-going discharges. Principles for determination of expected lightning strokes. Lightning strokes to power transmission lines :expected striking points and strokes to 100 km line and year. The calculation of induced voltages across insulator strings of transmission lines. Model measurements and the resistivity pool. The lightning current flow in the conductors of the Linghtning Protection System. The thermal field developed in conductors. Sizing conductors and determination of cross-sections. The princciples of protection of buildings and installations against direct strokes. Case study. The calculation of induced voltages in electrical and electronic devices and circuits. Protection elements in electrical and electronic systems.
